How serious is the EU about supporting democracy and human rights in its neighbourhood?

Throughout the spring of 2008, FRIDE and the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) have jointly been working on the research project Strengthening the European Union as a force for democracy and human rights in its neighbourhood.

As part of this project, six case studies have been produced that offer background, analysis and concrete recommendations on the different instruments available to the EU to support human rights and democratic reform, foremost through the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP).

The six case studies produced within this project assess the EU’s efforts to support democracy three countries in the EU’s Southern neighbourhood – Jordan, Lebanon and Morocco – and three countries in the EU’s East – Azerbaijan, Belarus and Ukraine. All six ECFR-FRIDE Democracy Working Papers will be available soon.
